Nigeria has been thrown into mourning after a deadly terrorist ambush claimed the life of a senior army commander and several soldiers, a development that is sending fresh waves of concern across Africa and beyond.
Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah and his troops were buried in a solemn military ceremony in Borno State, following a fierce attack by insurgents in the troubled northeast — a region that has become the epicentre of Nigeria’s long-running war against extremism.
The fallen general, described by colleagues as fearless and committed, died alongside his men during a coordinated assault on a military base in Benisheikh.
The scale and precision of the attack have once again raised serious questions about the growing strength and strategy of armed groups operating in the region.

Groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have continued to evolve, launching deadly raids that target both military positions and civilians — despite years of counterterrorism operations.
The burial ceremony, attended by top military officials and grieving families, was filled with emotion, honour, and anger — a reflection of a nation still struggling to contain a conflict that refuses to fade.
This latest loss is more than a tragedy — it is a warning signal. The killing of a high-ranking officer highlights a dangerous shift in the conflict, suggesting that insurgents are becoming bolder, more coordinated, and increasingly capable of striking at the heart of Nigeria’s security structure.
As Africa watches closely, the question now is urgent and unavoidable: is the war in northeastern Nigeria entering a more dangerous phase?
