Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed concern over the wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but insisted that the dwindling number of governors in the party does not unsettle him.
His remarks followed the resignation of Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State from the PDP on Monday. The development leaves Makinde and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State as the only two PDP governors nationwide.
Speaking at an expanded meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja on Tuesday, Makinde described the current situation as a difficult phase not only for the PDP but also for Nigeria’s democratic system.
He noted that in conversations with individuals familiar with the country’s political evolution, many admitted they had never witnessed a landscape as volatile as the present one. Despite the party’s reduced gubernatorial strength, Makinde maintained that he remains unperturbed.
According to him, history will ultimately judge the actions taken during this period. He expressed confidence that when the chapter is written, he and his colleagues will be seen as standing with the people. He added that the present turbulence is temporary and will eventually pass.

Makinde urged party leaders and members to carefully consider the roles they choose to play, both individually and collectively, warning that their decisions will be measured by how history records this moment.
Also addressing the gathering, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara called for deliberate efforts to resolve the party’s challenges. He said the Board views the recent Appeal Court judgment as a directive to reposition and rebuild the PDP.
Wabara emphasized that the party respects the rule of law and sees the court ruling as an opportunity for a fresh start. He clarified that the meeting was not convened for ceremonial speeches but to make serious and constitutionally guided decisions.
Stressing adherence to the party’s constitution and the broader principles of the rule of law, he said the Board would deliberate and take decisions after receiving briefings from the expanded session.
He said that although some forces may be attempting to sideline the party, members must remain open-minded and work collectively to restore the PDP’s footing.
