A devastating mine accident in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has claimed the lives of more than 200 people, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday at mining sites in Rubaya, an area in North Kivu province known for its rich deposits of coltan. According to officials from the Ministry of Mines, the collapse followed unusually intense rainfall that destabilized the mining area. Preliminary reports indicate that the death toll exceeds 200 victims, with approximately 70 of them believed to be minors. Rescue efforts have been severely complicated because the Rubaya mining region is currently under the control of the M23 rebel group, limiting access for emergency teams and government authorities.
