Heavy Rains Trigger Deadly Mine Collapse in DR Congo, More Than 200 Feared Dead

A ‎devastating mine accident in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has claimed the lives of more than 200 people, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. ‎ ‎The tragedy occurred on Tuesday at mining sites in Rubaya, an area in North Kivu province known for its rich deposits of coltan. ‎ ‎According to officials from the Ministry of Mines, the collapse followed unusually intense rainfall that destabilized the mining area. ‎ ‎Preliminary reports indicate that the death toll exceeds 200 victims, with approximately 70 of them believed to be minors. ‎ ‎Rescue efforts have been severely complicated because the Rubaya mining region is currently under the control of the M23 rebel group, limiting access for emergency teams and government authorities.
