Former Ghana Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention after a United States court set his bail bond at $65,000 (about $65K) and ordered conditions on his release.
According to his lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, Ofori-Atta’s release comes with strict conditions including being fitted with an electronic monitoring device that tracks his movements, and restrictions that effectively limit where he can travel while his legal case continues.
The former minister has been in ICE custody amid legal proceedings related to his immigration status in the United States. The bail decision allows him to remain out of detention while complying with court orders and monitoring requirements.
Legal observers say the use of an electronic monitor and the bond are standard in U.S. immigration cases to address flight-risk concerns and to ensure compliance with court conditions.
The development adds to heightened scrutiny around Ofori-Atta, who has been a central figure in political and legal debates in Ghana, including ongoing investigations linked to his time in public office.
