Pakistan to Host U.S.-Iran Talks as Fighting Continues in Lebanon

Pakistan is preparing to host negotiations between the United States and Iran this week, even as heavy fighting continues in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah.

The talks, set to begin Saturday in Islamabad, aim to de-escalate tensions following weeks of conflict that began in early March. However, Iran has stated that its participation depends on the United States ensuring a ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon.

On Wednesday, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon killed more than 200 people and wounded over 1,000, according to local reports. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes target Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, and are not covered by the U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement.

The U.S. delegation will be led by Vice President JD Vance, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner. It remains unclear whether Iran will send its delegation as planned.

For African nations, the conflict has already caused rising fuel and food prices due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route. South Africa has called for restraint and dialogue, but diplomats say a breakthrough is uncertain.
