Tensions across the Middle East have deepened after Iran declared that the strategic Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes remains accessible only to countries Tehran considers allies, while warning “enemies” against passage.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the waterway was “not completely closed,” but insisted there was “no reason” to allow ships linked to hostile nations and their allies to move through the narrow maritime corridor.
The statement comes amid growing military and diplomatic friction involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The Strait of Hormuz handles a massive share of the world’s oil and gas exports, making any disruption a direct threat to global energy markets, African fuel-importing economies, and international trade routes.
