In a dramatic turn in Middle East diplomacy, Donald Trump has announced that Iran has agreed to hand over its enriched uranium reserves — a move he says could bring a major conflict to a close and reshape global security dynamics.
Speaking from the White House, Trump described the development as a breakthrough, claiming both sides are “very close” to sealing a peace deal after weeks of escalating tensions and military threats. The uranium stockpile, which Washington believes could be used to build nuclear weapons, has long been the central sticking point in negotiations.
The announcement comes amid fragile ceasefire efforts and intense backchannel talks, with the United States previously warning of renewed airstrikes and sustained economic pressure if Iran refused to comply.
However, the claim remains unverified. Tehran has yet to publicly confirm any agreement, and past negotiations between the two rivals have repeatedly collapsed over disagreements on nuclear rights and sanctions relief.

For Africa and the wider Global South, the stakes are enormous. A successful deal could stabilize global oil markets, ease geopolitical tensions, and reduce economic shocks that often hit developing economies hardest.
But if talks fail, the risk of a broader regional war — with global ripple effects — remains dangerously real.
The world now watches closely: is this the beginning of peace, or just another fragile promise in a long-running nuclear standoff?
