The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has raised urgent concerns over the sharp rise in cooking gas prices and erratic supply, warning that the situation could trigger scarcity and deepen hardship for Nigerians.
According to the association, LPG now sells for over ₦1,500 per kilogramme in many locations, a sharp jump from less than ₦1,000 recently.
Some dealers are reportedly charging between ₦1,600 and ₦2,000 per kg. Marketers say they now pay between ₦25.2 million and ₦26.2 million for 20 metric tonnes of the product.

In a statement signed by NALPGAM’s National President, Edu Inyang, and Executive Secretary, Bassey Essien, the association described the development as “sad and rather very pathetic.” They warned that if unchecked, citizens might “rise against the owners of gas filling stations.”
The group noted that millions of households, small businesses, and low-income families are struggling to refill cylinders. Many are now reverting to firewood and charcoal, undermining years of progress in Nigeria’s clean energy transition.
NALPGAM called on the Federal Government, NMDPRA, NNPCL, and other stakeholders to take urgent steps, including increasing domestic LPG allocation, reducing import bottlenecks, and investing in storage infrastructure. “Decisive action is needed now,” the association said.
