Abeokuta, Ogun State, In a political earthquake that has reset the clock on Ogun State’s 2027 governorship race, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thunderously anointed Oladipupo Adebutu as its consensus candidate, setting the stage for a fiery rematch against the ruling APC.
Adebutu, the party’s 2023 flagbearer who lost a razor-thin contest to Governor Dapo Abiodun, was handed the mantle again on Sunday during a charged primary election in Abeokuta.
The decision came after party members across all 236 wards of the state participated in an affirmation process that cemented Adebutu’s status as the undisputed torchbearer.
The Chairman of the Ogun State PDP Governorship Primary Panel, Afolabi Ariyo, made it official via a decisive voice vote, declaring: “I hereby declare that Hon. Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu is the winner and is returned as the consensus candidate.”
The event crackled with intensity as former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, stormed the gathering with a prophecy that sent shivers through the political class. After praising the massive turnout, Fayose drew a hardline in the sand.
“After today, Ladi Adebutu can only be Governor. He cannot be Deputy Governor. He cannot be Senator. He cannot be Councillor,” Fayose thundered, effectively binding Adebutu’s political fate to the state’s top executive seat. “What we saw outside this hall simply portends hope that the people are ready to put Ladi Adebutu in the Governor’s office.”

In an electrifying acceptance speech, Adebutu declared the moment “historic” but quickly pivoted to a battle cry. He framed the 2027 contest not just as an election, but as a “must-win” crusade to rescue Ogun from what he called “suffering and maladministration.”
Referring to the controversial 2023 election which he insists the PDP won before being robbed by manipulation Adebutu vowed that this time would be different.
“However, this time in 2027, I believe in God that your votes will count and will put me in office as your duly elected Governor,” he proclaimed, reminding supporters that the APC has held Ogun State for over a decade despite its vast human and natural resources.
Earlier, Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, declared that the party has finally buried its internal crises and legal battles, emerging more united than ever. He called on all members to lock arms, sustain stability, and march toward victory.
With the ruling APC now on notice, Ogun State appears headed for a political tsunami as both parties brace for a high-stakes rematch in 2027.
