Judicial Clean-Up in Africa’s Largest Economy: Nigeria Moves Against 100 Lawyers in Anti-Graft Sweep

Nigeria’s legal profession is facing renewed scrutiny after anti-corruption authorities revealed that more than 100 lawyers are currently under investigation or prosecution for corruption-related offences, while a disciplinary body has sanctioned 17 legal practitioners for professional misconduct.

The disclosure came during a major legal gathering in Abuja where leaders of the judiciary and the bar discussed growing concerns about ethical standards within the country’s legal system.

According to the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), numerous senior members of the legal profession are being prosecuted over allegations linked to financial crimes and corruption.

At the same event, the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) the body responsible for regulating lawyers’ conduct announced sanctions against 17 lawyers found guilty of professional misconduct. The penalties range from multi-year suspensions to other disciplinary measures, depending on the severity of the violations.

Legal experts say the actions signal a broader effort to restore credibility and public trust in Nigeria’s justice system, which has long faced criticism over corruption and unethical practices within parts of the legal profession.

Authorities insist the investigations and sanctions are part of an ongoing drive to strengthen accountability across the judiciary and legal sector, warning that lawyers who undermine the rule of law will face strict consequences.
