A university student’s allegation of being stripped and assaulted at the Ozoro Fertility Festival in Delta State has triggered nationwide outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of women at cultural events.
The 300-level student, who filed a police report on March 25, said she was attacked by a group of men while attending the festival in the Isoko area.
Videos allegedly showing the assault circulating on social media have intensified public concern.
. The Delta State Police Command confirmed it has opened a full investigation, promising that “any individuals identified will face prosecution.”
Local women’s groups say harassment during the annual festival has become a growing problem.

“This should be a celebration of culture, not a place where young women feel unsafe,” one advocacy leader said.
The Ozoro traditional council condemned the alleged assault, insisting it “does not represent the community’s cultural values” and urging security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
The student’s university said it is providing support and cooperating with police investigators.
Human-rights organisations across Nigeria and the diaspora have called for urgent reforms to ensure that festivals and public gatherings are safe for women and girls.
Police say no arrests have been made yet, but investigations are ongoing.
