Democracy on the line. ECOWAS sends Akufo-Addo to oversee Benin’s presidential election. Big story for Africa!

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to head its High-Level Election Observation Mission to the Republic of Benin, signaling the bloc’s heightened focus on safeguarding democratic stability in the region.

. The mission, announced by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, will be deployed from 7 to 15 April 2026, ahead of Benin’s crucial 12 April presidential election. Akufo-Addo, who completed two terms as Ghana’s president, is expected to oversee observer teams assessing campaign conduct, security conditions, and the integrity of the vote.

The deployment is part of ECOWAS’ mandate under its Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which requires member states to uphold free, fair, and credible elections.

The bloc said the decision reflects its confidence in Akufo-Addo’s diplomatic experience and his track record in regional mediation.

ECOWAS urged all political actors in Benin to maintain peace, respect the rule of law, and ensure a transparent process.

With tensions rising across West Africa due to coups and contested elections, the Benin vote is being closely watched by international partners, including the African Union, the European Union, and major global democracies.

The success of the mission will be seen as a critical test of ECOWAS’ credibility as the region battles democratic backsliding and insecurity.
