South African billionaire investor Magda Wierzycka has returned to her home country after leaving the United Kingdom, announcing plans to launch a major artificial intelligence investment fund aimed at supporting African technology startup.
Wierzycka, the founder of the investment firm Sygnia, reportedly relocated from the UK following sweeping tax reforms targeting wealthy foreign residents. The policy changes including high inheritance and dividend taxes were described by the investor as increasingly hostile to capital and entrepreneurship.
Now back in South Africa, she is preparing to launch a venture capital fund dedicated to artificial intelligence startups. The initiative aims to provide funding, technical support, and global market access to promising tech innovators across the country.

According to Wierzycka, Africa has the intellectual talent to compete globally in advanced technologies but often lacks the investment capital needed to scale innovation. Her new fund will target early-stage AI companies while also offering marketing, licensing, and product development support.
With an estimated personal fortune of about $250 million, Wierzycka is widely regarded as the richest self-made woman in South Africa and one of the continent’s most influential financial figures.
Analysts say her decision to invest in AI could help position South Africa as a rising technology hub while preventing local engineering talent from relocating overseas.
