BY UCHECHI OKPORIE

A new military ranking has revealed the African nations with the most powerful armed forces in 2024, with Egypt emerging as the continent’s strongest military power.

According to the Global Firepower military index, Egypt maintains the top position in Africa due to its advanced air force, strong naval fleet, and large number of active personnel. The North African nation is also ranked among the most powerful militaries in the world.

Following closely behind is Algeria, which holds the second spot in Africa, thanks to its modern defense systems and significant investment in military equipment.

South Africa ranks third on the continent, maintaining a well-trained and technologically capable defense force, while Nigeria occupies the fourth position, reflecting its major role in regional security operations and counter-terrorism efforts in West Africa. Other countries listed among Africa’s top military powers include Ethiopia, Angola, Morocco, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tunisia, and Sudan, completing the top ten. The ranking considers several factors including manpower, military equipment, financial resources, logistical capability, and geographical advantages.

The report highlights the growing strategic importance of African militaries as countries across the continent continue to invest in defense systems to strengthen national security and regional stability.

From Brothers to Burdens: Why Nigerians Are No Longer Welcome in South Africa, Ghana - The Sad Story

Across parts of Africa, a troubling pattern has emerged: periodic waves of hostility directed at Nigerians living and working in other African countries. In South Africa, it has manifested in violent xenophobic attacks; in Ghana, tensions have surfaced through business closures and regulatory crackdowns. The rhetoric is familiar—“they should go back home.” But beneath that language lies a far more complex and uncomfortable reality than simple dislike of a nationality. This moment is not just about Nigerians; it is about economics, identity, governance failure, and the unfinished project of African unity.

$28Trillion vs $3Trillion: The Stark Economic Gap Between the U.S. and Africa

The United States has a nominal GDP of roughly $27–28 trillion, while the entire continent of Africa produces about $3.0–3.2 trillion. That means the U.S. economy is about eight to nine times larger than Africa’s combined output, even though Africa consists of over 50 countries.
