Negotiations between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) over a long-standing 2009 employment agreement were paused for one week after talks aimed at averting industrial action failed to produce a final resolution.
Negotiations between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) over a long-standing 2009 employment agreement were paused for one week after talks aimed at averting industrial action failed to produce a final resolution.
The discussions, held at the National University Commission in Abuja, come as SSANU presses the government to conclude renegotiations of the deal that covers non-teaching university workers.
The union has previously set an ultimatum running through April 30, warning that failure to reach a fair outcome would leave it no choice but to launch an indefinite, nationwide strike alongside its Joint Action Committee partner.

SSANU leaders have expressed frustration that while the government recently concluded and is already implementing a renegotiated contract with the academics’ union the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) non-teaching staff have yet to see similar progress, heightening concerns about equality and labour rights in Nigeria’s public higher-education sector.
The week-long adjournment is intended to allow both sides to consult further, but union officials remain adamant that clear timelines, firm commitments, and tangible outcomes are essential to avoid disruptive labour action later this month.
Experts say the standoff highlights broader tensions between government policy and public-sector unions in Africa’s largest economy, where inflationary pressures and wage disputes have periodically triggered strikes and public unrest.
