Uganda Launches Major Crackdown on Illegal Sand Mining as Environmental Crisis Deepens

Uganda has intensified efforts to combat illegal sand mining after the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) launched a major enforcement operation in Lwera wetlands, one of the country’s most environmentally sensitive areas.

Authorities say the crackdown targets operators accused of extracting sand without licenses, destroying wetlands, and violating environmental protection laws.

Several mining sites were shut down during the operation, while equipment linked to illegal activities was seized.

Lwera wetlands, located along the Kampala-Masaka highway, are considered a critical ecosystem that supports biodiversity, water regulation, and local livelihoods.

Environmental experts have long warned that unchecked sand mining in the area could lead to flooding, land degradation, and permanent ecological damage.

NEMA officials said the operation forms part of Uganda’s broader strategy to protect natural resources and enforce sustainable development laws.

The agency stressed that illegal exploitation of wetlands and natural reserves would no longer be tolerated.

The crackdown comes amid rising demand for construction materials across East Africa, where rapid urban growth has increased pressure on sand resources.

However, conservationists argue that poor regulation has allowed environmental abuse to flourish. Local communities have welcomed the move, saying illegal mining has damaged farmland, water sources, and roads used by residents.

Ugandan authorities have pledged continued surveillance and further enforcement actions against individuals and companies found violating environmental regulations.
