Kenya has launched a major homicide investigation after 33 bodies, including 25 children, were exhumed from a mass grave at a church-owned cemetery in the country’s west an incident now drawing international attention and intensifying concerns over the handling of unclaimed bodies across Africa.
.. Detectives say the remains appear to have been transferred from Nyamira District Hospital under questionable circumstances and buried without the required court authorization. Two people have been arrested, and autopsies are underway to determine how the victims died.
Authorities confirmed that some of the bodies were poorly handled and buried in gunny sacks, raising fears of possible criminal activity or a major breach of public-health regulations. The identities of the deceased remain unknown.
Local residents who discovered the unusual burials called for full transparency.

“We need authorities to conduct a thorough investigation,” said resident Brian Kibunja, while others demanded clarity on whether government officials or private actors authorized the mass burial.
The discovery is Kenya’s third mass-grave case in recent years, following the Shakahola doomsday cult tragedy and a 2024 dumpsite recovery in Nairobi.
Human rights observers warn that the pattern points to wider systemic failures and persistent allegations of state abuses.
Kenyan authorities say the investigation is ongoing and more arrests may follow.
