Food prices in Lagos continue to climb sharply as rising fuel costs place increasing pressure on traders and consumers, deepening Nigeria’s ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Market traders across the city say the jump in transportation expenses has made it difficult to keep food prices stable. Basic items such as rice, garri, tomatoes and vegetables now cost significantly more, leaving many shoppers with fewer options at the stalls.
Some Lagos residents told the BBC they have had to reduce their purchases or switch to cheaper food items as household budgets tighten. Traders, meanwhile, report lower sales as customers struggle to cope with the rising cost of essentials.
