Nigerians Told to Protect Their Votes in 2027

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, Michael Abbey has urged Nigerians to vote wisely and reject vote-buying, saying citizens have the power to influence the country's future through their votes.

In an interview with Next Africa Daily on October 10, 2026, Abbey said Nigerians should not sell their votes for money or other temporary benefits. He urged voters to consider the credibility and past performance of candidates before making their decisions.

He expressed hope that Nigerian youths would play a stronger role in the coming elections, noting that increased political awareness could encourage more young people to participate in the electoral process. Abbey also urged voters to protect their votes and speak up against electoral malpractice. He pointed to the Osun State election as an example of citizens exercising their voting rights and defending their choices.

On political accountability, he said Nigerians should stop judging politicians by campaign promises alone and instead look at what they have achieved while in office.

He also called on the incoming government to give greater attention to agriculture, saying investment in the sector could create jobs, help reduce the cost of living, and support the country's economy.

Speaking about politicians who move from one political party to another, Abbey said leaders should be judged by their records and actions rather than their party affiliations. He added that voters should be allowed to decide who represents them through the ballot.

Abbey encouraged Nigerians to think carefully before casting their votes, stressing that the decisions they make during the elections could affect the country's future.
